Denture Care Basics for New Denture Wearers

Your new affordable quality dentures probably make you feel invincible, but even the best dentures need a little care and attention to deliver optimal performance. They’ll never get cavities or need root canals, but they could still become warped or broken, and then you would need expensive repairs or replacement. If you clean and store them properly, and consult your dentist as soon as any problems arise, your dentures can keep you smiling for years. The following guidelines can help you protect your permanent dentures and get the most from your new teeth:

  1. Clean your dentures daily without exception. Soak them in denture cleanser regularly to keep them white.
  2. When brushing your dentures, use a denture brush and gentle strokes to avoid damaging any plastic or metal components. Moisten the brush to help avoid surface scratches.
  3. Before you reinsert your dentures, use toothpaste and a toothbrush to clean gums, tongue, and any remaining natural teeth to remove plaque and stimulate blood flow to the tissues.
  4. After brushing thoroughly, rinse with mouthwash to freshen your breath.
  5. Although it may be tempting, never try to make adjustments to your dentures yourself. Doing so could harm your dentures or your mouth.

Removal, Care, and Storage of Your Dentures

Unless your dentures are attached to implants, you can remove them for care and storage.

  • Fill your bathroom sink with water—if you accidentally drop your dentures into water, they are less likely to be damaged.
  • Before you remove your dentures, swish warm water or mouthwash around in your mouth.
  • For removal of the top denture, position your thumb against your front tooth surface, gently pressing upward and outward.
  • To remove the lower denture, pull it forward slowly while making a rocking motion.
  • Keep your dentures moist when you’re not wearing them. Allowing your dentures to dry out can alter their shape, which can affect how they fit.
  • Store your dentures in cool water or a denture-soaking solution. Never put them in hot water, which causes warping.
  • If your dentures have metal attachments, follow your dentist’s instructions for care and cleaning. Metal parts could tarnish if stored in water.
  • Visit your dentist in Clearwater regularly for check-ups.
