A Kid’s Guide to Healthy Habits
Healthy habits are a good thing to have. You may already follow some healthy habits in your everyday life. Do you wash your hands after you use the bathroom or before you eat your food? Do you eat a balanced meal that includes fruits and vegetables? Do you brush your teeth regularly? If you do any of these activities, you are on the right track to a healthy lifestyle! Still, there is more you could be doing to keep yourself happy and healthy.
Healthy eating habits mean eating balanced meals. You have probably heard your mom or dad ask you to finish your vegetables before you leave the table. They are asking for a good reason. Fruits and vegetables contain important vitamins and minerals that our bodies need to grow big and strong. For example, dairy products like milk and yogurt are high in calcium, which helps our bones and teeth to stay strong. In addition to eating healthy foods, it is important for you to drink a lot of water. On a daily basis, you should have six to eight glasses of water. Drinking enough water keeps you hydrated and allows your body and your brain to function at their best.
Fitness and Exercise
A proper fitness regimen is important for keeping your body healthy. Through exercise, you are able to build muscle and help your body work on its breathing skills, its coordination skills, and its overall endurance. Working out also helps your body to pump blood more efficiently. There are a lot of great ways you can give your body a good workout. A simple walk through the park with your mom or dad gives your body a chance to work on its breathing and blood-pumping. If you enjoy playing sports like soccer, basketball, or hockey, those are great ways to work out as well. The type of exercise you do is not what’s important. What matters is that you actually get up and move!
Hygiene is a necessary part of staying healthy. While brushing your teeth or washing your hands doesn’t sound like fun, they’re both very important. Brushing your teeth is important because it helps us clean our mouths and keep our teeth healthy. Similarly, flossing is just as important so that we can remove food from between our teeth. It’s important to brush and floss twice a day to maintain a healthy mouth and gums. Bathing is also an important part of hygiene. With soap and shampoo, we can smell great and keep our bodies clean.

Germs are what make us sick, and they are everywhere! That’s why we need to eat right, exercise, and take care of ourselves to stay healthy. Regular visits to your family doctor and dentist are also recommended. They are able to check on the things in our body that we cannot see. Sometimes, doctors and dentists find problems we didn’t even know existed. By catching a problem, like a cold or a cavity, before it becomes a big problem, we are able to take care of it sooner and keep ourselves healthy. Another way that we can help ourselves stay healthy is by making sure our food is properly prepared. While fruits and vegetables come ready to eat, it is important that we wash them thoroughly prior to eating them. This will remove any chemicals that could be on the surface of the fruit as well as any germs. In addition, it’s important that things like eggs, meat, and other raw foods are properly cooked before we eat them. If these items aren’t properly cooked, we could get very sick from the bacteria in these foods.

A cold isn’t any fun to have. Your nose gets stuffy, your throat hurts, and you have a constant tickle in your lungs that makes you want to cough. In order to prevent a cold from coming on, it’s important to drink plenty of orange juice and eat well-balanced meals packed with vitamins and minerals. If you notice that someone is sick, it is a good idea to stay away from them until they are well again. Sometimes, we can’t avoid those who are sick. Luckily, you can help prevent a cold by washing your hands after you spend time with that person. Another tip to prevent colds is to never share silverware or drinks with other people. You never know if someone is sick!
